About Us

A Journey Through Generations.

For over 100 years, C McGough & Sons has been a pillar of support for families in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Cheshire, and beyond. Our story begins with Clement McGough, a man of compassion and integrity, who founded our family funeral business in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Clement’s commitment to service was deeply rooted in his upbringing, as the son of William Peter McGough and Anne Elizabeth Bould, who instilled in him the values of empathy and community.

As a young man, Clement’s journey led him from the brickworks to H & R Johnson Limited, where he honed his skills as a joiner. It was during his time working on the building of the Sacred Heart in Tunstall that he was approached by Parish Priest Fr. P J Ryan to craft a coffin for a family in need. Clement’s act of kindness extended far beyond the initial request, as he organised and conducted the entire funeral, easing the burden for the grieving family.

Inspired by this experience, Clement embraced his newfound calling as a funeral director, a role he fulfilled with dedication and compassion. Supported by his wife Ethel, Clement built the family business, with Ethel serving as secretary and bookkeeper. Together, they navigated the challenges and triumphs of entrepreneurship, laying the foundation for generations to come.
