Losing a loved one

When a Death Occurs at Home

If a death occurs at home, it is essential to have a medical professional verify the death. You should call the deceased’s GP or out of hours doctor. After verification, you can contact us for assistance and to collect the body. We are available to provide advice and support whenever you need it.

The GP will issue a medical certificate with the cause of death description, and you’ll be required to register the death at your local Registrar of Births & Deaths.

In cases of unexpected or unknown deaths, the coroner may be involved to determine the cause. We can advise you on the necessary steps in such situations.

When a Death Occurs at the Hospital

In the event of a hospital death, the hospital will retain the deceased until all required paperwork is completed. You’ll need to contact the hospital’s bereavement office, typically the next working day, to initiate the process.

The bereavement office will ask a few questions and consult with doctors. If a medical Cause of Death certificate can be issued, you’ll be advised on further steps. If not, the coroner will be involved, and we’ll guide you on how to proceed.

Registering a Death

To register a death, you’ll need to:

1

Collect the Death Certificate from your family doctor or the hospital.

2

Register the death with the Registrar of Deaths in the district where the deceased passed away.

3

You'll need the Death Certificate, the deceased's medical card, and any relevant documents.

The registrar will request information about the death, including the place, date, and the deceased’s personal details. They will provide you with a Green Certificate for the funeral director and a Death Certificate for other legal purposes.

Additionally, the registrar will discuss the Tell Us Once service, a government service to notify various departments about the death.

Please contact us or refer to our list of local register offices for further assistance with the registration process.

Involvement of the Coroner

The coroner may become involved for various reasons, including unexpected deaths, accidents, or if the cause of death is unknown. The coroner’s role is to determine the precise cause of death, which may require additional investigations. If the death is due to natural causes, you will be advised to register the death with the local registrar. We are here to provide support and guidance throughout this process. Feel free to contact us on our 24-hour numbers, 01782 834300 or 01782 515155, and one of our funeral directors will assist you.
