  • Grave Area for Cremation Ashes: They have designated areas specifically for the interment of cremation ashes, allowing families to create a lasting tribute.

  • Reopen Graves: Families can choose to reopen existing graves to bring their loved ones together in rest.

  • Graves for Cremation Ashes: These graves provide a peaceful setting for those who prefer cremation.

  • Woodland Garden for Burial of Cremation Ashes: This environmentally friendly option offers a natural and beautiful setting for the burial of cremation ashes.

  • Buxton/Wilford Granite Seat Plaques: They offer granite seat plaques as a commemorative option, perfect for honouring the memory of your loved ones.

Grave and Memorial Maintenance

Following a burial in a lawn grave, they ensure the grave is topped up as necessary as the ground settles. Typically, they turf graves between October and March. Prior to turfing, the ground must be allowed to settle, which can take up to six months. For burials taking place in spring or summer, this timeframe may extend, and they generally refrain from turfing during the summer months, resuming in the autumn when weather conditions are more suitable.

They ask that all memorial items be placed on the memorial foundation rather than directly on the grass. To maintain safety and respect within the cemetery, please avoid using breakable items such as glass or earthenware. If any items are deemed unsuitable, they will reach out to request their removal within two weeks. Immediate removal may occur for any items that pose an immediate danger to staff or visitors.

Removal of Floral Tributes

To maintain the cemetery’s aesthetic and respectful environment, funeral wreaths and floral tributes will be removed two weekends after a burial. Additionally, all Christmas wreaths and floral tributes will be cleared on or after the third Monday in January.

At C McGough & Sons, they are committed to providing compassionate care and support to families during their time of loss. If you have any questions or wish to discuss arrangements at Smallthorne Cemetery, please do not hesitate to contact us. They are here to help you through this difficult time.
