Burial Options at Hanley Cemetery

Hanley Cemetery is open 24 hours, seven days a week, providing families with the flexibility to visit at a time that suits them. The cemetery offers several burial options, ensuring that each family can find the most fitting tribute for their loved one. These options include:

  • New Full Earth Burials, offering families a dedicated space for new burials
  • Re-Open Graves, allowing family members to be buried alongside their loved ones in existing plots
  • Graves for Cremation Ashes, providing a specific place for the burial of ashes
  • Garden of Remembrance, featuring a lawned area for the scattering of cremation ashes, offering a serene and reflective environment for those choosing cremation

While the chapel is no longer in use, Hanley Cemetery still provides a dignified space for reflection, and its war memorial stands as a poignant reminder of those who served.

Removal of Floral Tributes

To maintain the cemetery’s cleanliness and order, funeral wreaths and other floral tributes are respectfully removed two weekends after the burial. Additionally, all Christmas wreaths and floral tributes are cleared on or after the third Monday in January, ensuring the cemetery remains a serene and well-kept place for all visitors.

If you have any questions or require more information about burial options or memorial guidelines at Hanley Cemetery, please don’t hesitate to contact us at C McGough & Sons. We are here to support you during this difficult time.

Cemetery Maintenance and Memorial Guidelines

After a burial in a lawn grave, the cemetery carefully maintains the plot. As the ground naturally settles, the grave will be topped up as needed. Graves are typically turfed between October and March, with up to six months allowed for the ground to settle before any turf is laid. They avoid turfing during summer, waiting until more suitable weather conditions in autumn.

Families who choose to leave memorial items are kindly asked to place them on the memorial foundation, not on the grass, and to avoid items made of breakable materials like glass or earthenware. They want to ensure the safety of visitors and staff, as well as maintain the beauty of the grounds. If any items are deemed unsuitable or dangerous, they will reach out to families to have them removed within two weeks. In cases where immediate danger is posed, they reserve the right to remove items right away.
