If you’re facing financial challenges in covering the costs
of a funeral, you may be eligible for assistance through
the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Social
Fund.
Here’s some essential information to guide you through
the process, although it’s crucial to consider this as
general advice and seek personalised assistance where
necessary.
If you require financial support to arrange a funeral, you could qualify for a Funeral Payment from the DWP Social Fund. The amount you receive depends on your circumstances and eligibility.
To apply for assistance with funeral expenses, it’s important to submit your claim within six months of the funeral date.
To be eligible for assistance, you (or your partner) must receive
one of the following:
Income support
Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Pension Credit
Housing Benefit
The disability or severe disability element of Working Tax Credit
One of the extra elements of Child Tax Credit
Universal Credit
To start a claim for a Funeral Payment, you’ll need to download and fill out Form SF200, which can be found on the official government website here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/funeral payment-claim-form . You must make sure you submit your claim within a six-month period, even if you’re awaiting a decision on a qualifying benefit. It’s also important to note that only invoices, not estimates, will be accepted for claims made before the funeral.
Complete the form and either deliver it to your local Jobcentre Plus or send it via post to FREEPOST DWP Funeral Payments.
